My name is Dawn Carvajal: I'm a 16 year old soon-to-be collegiate archer! Why yes, I did say 16! I graduated two years early from High School thanks to the incredible flexibility of homeschool, and support from all my loved ones. Emmanuel College in Lavonia, Georgia will be home turf this Fall semester.
I'm starting this rally to help make my archery dreams possible! While on Emmanuel's NCAA II archery team, my tournament costs will mostly be covered...during the Spring and Fall semesters. Costs of tournaments during the Summer will be my responsibility. Additionally, I will need to either replace or get new equipment as needed. All of this tends to dine on my budget. I need your help! This will be an ongoing rally, as I'm in this for the long run. Currently, my focus and goals are to continue training, polishing my skills, particpating in numerous tournaments, and working hard on achieving a good USAT ranking!
Archery? What Hat Did That Come Out Of?
When it comes to sports, I've never found much appeal in the ones that fall into the "most popular and well known" category, i.e sports with balls! Kicking balls, throwing balls, hitting balls...I never found excitement in all of that. Swimming, fencing, equestrian, and of course archery were the sports that always left me star-struck. The first time I ever held a bow in my hand and shot was when I was about 6 years old. I was a part of the Saints of Florida home school PE program, which introduced us wee little tykes to various outdoor and sporty pursuits, giving us a taste of the excitement. Honestly, I don't remember much...except that it was certainly a recurve bow I shot, and I absolutely loved it! From then on, archery was always one of my "would be so cool if I could do that, but will probably never happen" dreams.
Fast foward a bit...about two years ago, my closest Home School friends and I would meet each week for a book club! It just so happened that we were currently studying The Swiss Family Robinson, and all of us were choosing what activity we should do following the completion of the book. We were particularly interested in the suggestion the lesson book gave of making your own bow out of twigs, but Groupon offered an even cooler alternative. A discount on a group archery lesson at a local range! I didn't even know there were any places near that offered something to fufill my arco cravings. From there, I knew I wanted a bow of my own. For several months, it was a struggle to decide between compound or recurve, but I soon decided that Olympic Recurve discipline was for me!
God has brought me a long way since then: meeting archery friends, finding a coach, and enrolling in Emmanuel College. Now, I have some big goals to work towards, and I can't reach them on my own.
What Exactly Do I Need?
My current goal is to raise $1,000. Like I stated before, I'm going to need funds for some tournaments and some of my equipment. I won't be able meet all these needs with just this rally, so I will be doing several fund-raisers. Here are some specifics:
Arrows: These tend to get frequently beaten-up, due to constant shooting! Once everything is totaled, arrows tend to be about $200-$500 for a new quiver-full. Also, nocks, tips, and vanes need to be replaced just as often, if not more than arrows do.
Tournament Registrations: Prices for tournament entry can range from $15 - $150! It depends on each competition. A state tournament would surely cost less than a national one.
Tournament Travel and Paraphenelia: Hotel rates vary according to events and seasons. Additionally, things like supplies and such can add up. I always do my best to find budget friendly hotels, and pack meals instead of eating out.
Lightweight Equipment: The little things are very important. A chest guard, arm guard, fingersling, and finger tab are vital to each shot. While I already have these things, they don't last forever, and need to be replaced once in a while. Things like this shouldn't go too far above $50 or $70.
Tools and Heavy Duty Equipment: I need to take care of my bow and set-up that the Lord has so generously blessed me with. To do this, I will need the right tools and equipment. A good example of this is an SKB hard bow case, which can cost up to $400. I will need this for travelling and keeping my bow safe, as I am currently growing out of my soft bacpack case.
Your support to help me with the funds for these needs will bring me closer to my goals! To be able to have the right equipment, and to compete even when my team is not in season is a way for me to take another step further to my long-term goal: making the US World or Olympic Team! Even if my archery journey doesn't take me that far, I want to compete as much as I can and further the sport of archery. With the right experience, I will be equipped with the tools to become a future coach, enabling me to honor my generous supporters by sharing the love for archery with others.
I would like to acknowledge all the people who have helped me get to where I am today in my archery journey. That would be my grandmothers, my parents, my Coach, and my archery friends! Thank all of you so much for supporting me and standing by me at all times! Without any of you, I would have never been able to grow and become an collegiate archer.
Also, I'd like to give a shout out to all of my boosters:
